Level 1 versus Level 2, briefly
Level 1 is the cord that came with the car, plugged into a normal outlet. It adds roughly three to five miles of range per hour. If you drive under 40 miles a day and the car sits overnight, it genuinely may be all you need, and you do not have to call anybody.
Level 2 is a 240-volt dedicated circuit, adding roughly 25 to 40 miles per hour depending on the charger and the car. It turns overnight into a full battery regardless of how you drove that day. That is what nearly everyone means when they call about a charger.
The question that sets the price
Before anything gets mounted, the panel gets a load calculation. The question is whether there is capacity left for a 40 or 60 amp circuit after your air conditioning, water heater, range and dryer have taken theirs.
Three outcomes:
- There is room and a free space in the panel. Straightforward install, usually the low end of the range.
- There is capacity but no physical space. Sometimes solvable with a subpanel or tandem breakers, depending on the panel.
- There is not enough service capacity. This is common with 100-amp service in older New Orleans homes, and it means a panel upgrade comes first. It is not an upsell, it is arithmetic — and it is much better to hear it before the charger is on the wall than after the breaker starts tripping.
There is also a load-management option worth asking about: some chargers can share a circuit or throttle themselves based on household demand, which occasionally avoids a service upgrade entirely. Whether it applies depends on your panel and your charger.
Hardwired or plug-in
A NEMA 14-50 receptacle lets you unplug and take the charger with you, and it is what a lot of people ask for. Hardwiring is required for outdoor installs in many cases, supports higher continuous amperage, and removes the receptacle as a failure point — cheap 14-50 receptacles overheating under continuous EV load is a known problem. For a charger that lives outside in New Orleans humidity and weather, hardwired is usually the right call.
Where the car actually parks
Plenty of New Orleans houses have no garage and no driveway alongside the panel. Common situations we deal with: a detached garage at the back of the lot needing a buried feeder, a carport on the opposite side of the house from the service, and street or side-yard parking where the run is long and has to be protected. The distance from panel to charger is the second biggest cost driver after panel capacity, because it is conduit, conductor and labor.
Outdoor installs need a NEMA-rated enclosure and proper weatherproofing, which in this climate is not optional. GFCI protection requirements apply and depend on the installation type.
Permit
An EV charger circuit is a permitted addition through the City of New Orleans. We pull it. Beyond code compliance, a permitted install is the one your insurer does not argue with, and utility or manufacturer incentive programs generally require proof of a licensed, permitted installation.
What it costs
