Where surges actually come from
Lightning is the one everyone pictures, and in southeast Louisiana we get plenty of it. But a direct strike is a small share of the damage. The more common causes:
- Grid switching. When utility equipment operates — a recloser cycling after a fault, load being switched, power being restored after an outage — the voltage transient that follows travels into houses. Restoration surges after an outage are a very common cause of appliance failure, which is why things die the moment the lights come back rather than when they went out.
- Nearby strikes. Lightning that hits a line a few streets away, not your roof.
- Inside your own house. Large motor loads — air conditioning compressor, well pump, refrigerator compressor — produce small transients every time they cycle. Individually harmless, cumulatively they degrade electronics over years.
What a whole-home unit does, and what it does not
A Type 2 surge protective device installs at your main panel and clamps voltage transients coming in from the service, diverting the excess to ground before it reaches your branch circuits. Everything downstream is covered — HVAC control boards, the refrigerator, the range, the water heater, the LED fixtures that are surprisingly sensitive, and every outlet in the house.
What it does not do is stop a direct lightning strike to your structure. Nothing at this price does. And it does not replace point-of-use protection: the correct setup is layered, with the panel-mounted device taking the large hit from outside and a decent power strip at the computer, the television and the home office handling what is left over and what your own house generates internally.
A note worth saying plainly: the cheap power strips sold as "surge protectors" are mostly just outlet strips with a light on them. And surge protective devices wear out — they absorb energy each time they work. Most have an indicator light. If it is not lit, the device is spent and no longer protecting anything, which is worth glancing at once a year.
Why it is worth it here specifically
Two things stack in New Orleans. The lightning density in southeast Louisiana is among the highest in the country, and the grid here takes repeated hits and restorations across a long storm season. Every restoration after an outage is another switching event into your panel.
Against that, replacing a single HVAC control board typically costs more than the surge protector and its installation together.
The install
About an hour. The device mounts at or in the main panel and lands on a dedicated double-pole breaker, with short, straight leads — lead length genuinely affects performance, which is one of the reasons this is not a good DIY project even for the confident. The panel has to be opened and worked live-adjacent, which is the other reason.
The best time to install one is during a panel upgrade, when the panel is already open and the labor is already happening. If your panel is old, full, or a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, that conversation comes first — a surge protector on a panel that cannot be trusted is the wrong order of operations.
What it costs
It depends on the device rating and what the panel requires. Added during other panel work, it is at the lower end because the mobilization and the panel opening are already paid for.

Because restoration is a switching event. When the utility re-energizes a circuit, the voltage transient that follows travels into the house. That is one of the most common causes of appliance and control board failure after an outage, and it is exactly what a service-entrance surge device is for.
Do surge protectors wear out?
Yes. They absorb energy every time they clamp a transient, and they degrade. Most units have a status indicator light. If it is off, the device has been used up and is no longer protecting anything. It is worth checking once a year.
Can I install one myself?
It is not a good DIY job. The device has to be landed on a dedicated breaker with short leads because lead length affects how well it performs, and the work happens in an open panel. This is an hour of a licensed electrician's time.
